What's the oldest book you own?
Submitted by Lies.
I have this really cool old book. It's the Kentucky 1931 Courses of Study book- basically the curriculum guide for the state of KY from 1931.
It contains such gems as:
Fourth grade reading- goal 6: Should show a taste for outside reading by having read at least one book a month from library. (Wishful thinking!)
Fifth grade reading- goal 25: Have one period a week devoted to reports on library reading. (See comment above...)
First graders should know at least two Mother Goose rhymes.
I LOOOOOVE this: Second graders should avoid pointing with finger (while reading- that's totally something we encourage!)
Allow good readers to read orally to the class a selection from a supplementary reader. Do not interrupt pupils if a word is mispronounced since it will have a tendency to break the continuity of the story, and will accomplish very little. (Really? Wow...)
This is also fantastic- in the history and civics section, it states that children should learn "those who lived in Kentucky before the white man came." Wow... that's funny.
There is some really interesting stuff in that book... some of it is so right on, and some of it is really backwards... but it's a really cool book. I got it at a Flea Market in Morehead, KY, last year when visiting my friend for her graduation. It is a great book... and it's definitely the oldest book I own. My copies of Gone with the Wind are old too, but they certainly aren't from 1931... :-)
There's always gonna be that one person, that no matter what they do or what they say or how many times they may hurt you... you just can't let them go because they just mean so much to you...
There are a lot of things that make me happy. And since I have a lot of things on my mind right now, I thought I would share some of them to cheer myself up! :-)
-When it's warm enough to wear flip flops
-Wearing skirts. Especially when they are long and spinny :-)
-Taking a walk with somebody on a nice day
-The smell of clean laundry
-Having a clean apartment
-Accomplishing something I worked hard at
-Smoothies!
-Listening to music really loudly
-Looking in my bank account and realizing there is enough money in there to pay all my bills with some left over :-)
-As silly as it sounds, having a job to go to every day
What makes you happy?
Some people come in and out of our lives, but there will always be someone who holds onto your heart.
Who is your someone?
What are your neighbors like? (The ones you live near or next to, not the ones in your Vox neighborhood!)
They let their dog out at 8am and it barks for hours at a time... they don't seem to notice or care, even though I've called to complain about the barking SEVERAL times and there has been a cop out to their house. I wouldn't mind the barking so much, but the dog wakes me up between 8 and 9 am EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND. So I think they are assholes.
Plus, I don't like passive aggressive little letters left in my mailbox by them. We fixed the problem they had with us, but they've yet to fix the problem I have with them, and we've lived here for 9 months. They just don't seem to care, and I don't understand, because they have to listen to it too... and it's LOUD. It's even woken up other people that have spent the night here as well... and they thought I was just complaining.
My other neighbors 2 doors down decided for a month straight that at 9:15 in the morning, they needed to cut down the tree in their back yard on the weekends. So not only did I have the annoying fucking dog waking me up, the tree was getting cut down as well! And guess what, people? Those little earplugs you buy at Kroger don't cancel out all sound...
Thankfully, I don't have anybody that lives on the other side of me. :-)
The girl who lives upstairs is cool. I almost never hear her at all, and she's pretty nice when I do run into her. I guess all neighbors aren't that bad...
Have you ever experienced road rage?
Submitted by Question of the Day.
LOL... I'm a redhead. I have a temper that matches the firey shade of my hair. And my dad has a temper even worse than I do and he's not even a redhead! So yeah... I get road rage at least once a day. SOMEBODY, somewhere, always manages to piss me off... usually by doing something completely STUPID like driving 10mph below the speed limit on a beautiful sunny day on a 1 lane road... by pulling out in front of me so I have to slam on my brakes... stuff like that.
Honestly, who DOESN'T get road rage at least once in their driving lifetime?
What do you love about where you live?
Submitted by Emu with a Clue.
I LOVE the place I live. Love love love. Of course, there are some things I don't love about this place, but there are so many things I love they outweigh the bad.
First of all, my apartment is totally unique. It's in this old house that was built in 1885. The ceilings are high, the original moldings are still in the apartment, the walls are painted really cool colors, and the place is cheap! Of course, the electric bill is expensive as hell... the place is leaky... but it's so cool! Unlike most apartments, it's unique- not one of those cookie cutter apartments in stupid apartment complexes. Of course, it doesn't have any storage, but what can you do? That just means I have to be creative!
The other cool thing about my apartment? The neighborhood! The houses around me are downright beautiful- Victorian homes built around the same time mine was... they are so pretty. Big trees are everywhere so the apartment stays cool in the summer and it just makes the street so pretty. Also? The neighborhood is within walking distance to pretty much anything you could possibly want in the world. There is a Walgreens on the corner, 3 churches, several restaurants, at least 2 grocery stores, a hardware store, a mini-mall, a movie theater, bars, coffee shops, Blockbuster, library... I could go on and on, but why should I?
I love my neighborhood... I just wish I could afford to own a house in this neighborhood instead of rent... but since they are such cool old Victorian houses, they run about a half a million dollars each... I guess I'll just have to settle for a house somewhere close...
In honor of Johnny Appleseed Day, show us a tree.
This picture is hanging on the wall in my kitchen... I stood inside a hotel to get this picture. One I wasn't staying in... lol.
How did you create your username for VOX? What influenced your decision?
Submitted by Strive2Be.
My username is erica the red. It was an easy choice. My name is Erica, and I'm a redhead. It's also a play on "Eric the Red," the explorer. Plus, Erica was already taken. And my other choices that I ALWAYS use were starting to get old.
I like my username. I think it's cute. :-)
The problem with living in an old house is that it's a pain in the ass to heat. As in, it's REALLY expensive for it to be so damn cold in here. Thank goodness for space heaters.
Health insurance is too expensive. And a pain in the rear end.
I've turned into a total insomniac lately, and that's never a good thing, considering I tend to need too much sleep in the first place.
Being a substitute teacher sucks and I hate it. I don't think I can handle 2 1/2 more months of it, and I might just have to find another job to hold me over until August.
Speaking of August, I have a guaranteed job for next year. Starting August 1. Yay!
My trip to California was amazing, and I'm going to post a few photos of my trip. Maybe I'll post more later.
I have a TON more pictures. I need to post more, but I don't feel like anybody reads this, so I see no point. But in some ways, I like it better than LJ. Where I actually update.
Maybe later. I should go to bed, because even though it feels like it's only 11:45, it really is 12:45 and I have to be up at 7:30... ugh. So, more later.
